Are Gel Blasters Legal in Australia?Gel blastersalso known as gel gunsgel shootersgel markershydro markers or gelsoftare toy guns similar in design to airsoft gunsbut launches superabsorbent polymer water beads most commonly sodium polyacrylatecolloquially called gel beadshydrogel ballswater bullets or gel balls as projectileswhich are often sold commercially as garden moisture retainers.
Gel blasters are often played in CQB -style shooting skirmishes similar to paintball by squads or local clubs of enthusiasts often referred to as "gelballers", but follows an airsoft -like honor-based gameplay umpiring system. MilSim games involving players wearing camouflage and dump pouches are very popular, while "SpeedGel" players are more casual with team jerseys and often wear paintball masks.
In addition to safety gear such as eye protectionsthe sport is heavily regulated on the field and players must adhere to safety rules. The general design of gel blasters are very similar to AEGs, comprising a coil spring -loaded pistonwith a T-piece to feed gel balls. The pump is either manually cocked or more commonly driven by an electric motor - gearbox assembly powered by batteries.
However, unlike the plastic airsoft pellets or the gelatin paintball capsulesgel blaster beads are very frangible and will simply fragment if any high pressure is introduced, so the propelling pump is small with a very low pressure output.
As a result, gel blasters have a much lower muzzle energyand hence shorter effective range and worse accuracy than most paintball guns, although recently muzzle-mounted frictional " hop-up " devices have been introduced to impart backspin on the gel beads and try increasing the range and precision. This nature of the beads' external and terminal ballistics make them much safer to play with although protective eyewear is still recommended and very unlikely to cause any property damage.
The water beads are also very cheap, easily transported in packets and only require soaking in water for a few hours prior to playing. Another feature is the ease of cleaning, since the water beads will break up on impact and dehydrate into biodegradable slush powder fragments. Originally, gel blasters used paintball-style top-mounted hoppers often disguised as fake optical sights that relied on gravity to load the water beads when shooting, because the water beads were typically too fragile to withstand even the pressure exerted by a follower spring.
However, in latebottom-mounted magazines with inbuilt motors were introduced, which draw power from the main batteries via contact points at the top to drive a cogwheel that gently pushed the beads up a feeding tube. This gave a lot more realism than previously and triggered a huge surge in the popularity and market of gel blasters. The recent proliferation of more hardy gel beads on the market has also introduced magazines using the traditional spring follower.
In early"Kublai P1", a gas-powered version modelled after the Glock pistolstarted to appear on the market. The original version is fully polymer, but an upgraded version with metal slide and barrel is available for sale in Australia. First introduced in China as an airsoft substitute as airsoft is banned in that country and a better alternative to foam dart gunsgel blasters have become increasingly popular in regions such as Malaysia Vietnam and particularly Australiawhere they quickly gained a massive following in states like Queensland and South Australia.

Indeed, many overseas paintball fields operate games covering all three disciplines. They are taking the country by storm and this is understandable because as toys go, they are pretty cool. Unfortunately, many vendors are advising people that they are legal in Australia and this is not universally so.
Most Gel-guns are imitation firearms and are therefore prohibited from importation without a permit. Gel guns are made of plastic, and contain a metal motor that projects the gel-soft pellet. Many are delivered in a clear plastic form and require assembly and painting, making detection by customs a nightmare.
They are also readily upgradable, with add on, or supplementary parts such as an exchange of motor, that one can be upgraded to provide air-soft velocities. Metal parts can also be imported that have the effect of giving the gel soft gun a more realistic feel.
There are three sources for Gel guns- local on-line suppliers, overseas suppliers and a small number of shops that have appeared locally — although in NSW these have been shut down.
If you are shot by a gel pellet, it will raise a small welt, not unlike, and smaller than one you would get from a paint ball, an airsoft pellet can at short range penetrate a soda can. Hardly likely to kill someone, although it could cause an eye injury if an eye was hit.
This raises a particular concern given our open borders and the fact that these toys are already in the community in some number there is a risk that an irresponsible youth could easily create a school lock down, and wind up being shot by Police who are seeking to prevent a school shooting.
A client who operates a Paint ball field recently obtained the following ruling from the NSW Firearms Registry regarding the legal status of Gel Blasters. This interpretation is correct :. Item 5 — Any self-loading centre-fire rifle of a kind that is designed or adapted for military purposes. Item 6 — Any self-loading shotgun of a kind that is designed or adapted for military purposes.
There are no provisions in the Regulations that are relevant to this advice. Sadly, I have to agree with this advice. Whether authorities like it or not, as a result of global trade, Gel-guns are here and here to stay. I believe there needs to be a sensible policy debate regarding how these items are to be regulated. Simply treating them as prohibited firearms is a legal overkill that shall cause considerable hardship, and for once, a degree of leadership is needed by regulators.
If you are thinking about getting a Gel Guns or trading in them, check with the Firearms Registry in your state or territory and also with Border Force before ordering one and get their response in writing.

He can assist you with:. Comments Comments. There are so many questions that come up when it comes to Gel Blasters and how they fit into the legal frameworks in Australia. I am going to try to explain some of the facts that I know from the Past year of fighting with Customs, the Attorney Generals Department and also the Queensland police.
The first thing I will say is that the general police officer on the street will deem a gel blaster as being an illegal Firearm. From state to state this will vary in severity and from officer to officer, they will either be ok with them but still unsure, or they will freak out.
What is pretty consistent across the board is that in general, the police do not really know if a Gel Blaster is legal or not and this varies from state to state as well. I sincerely do not believe this is the fault of the police or that the police are ignorant or anything like that. What I do believe is that the firearms laws in Australia are so convoluted and broad, that there is no body who really knows what the law is on certain items on any given day.
This is the reason that law abiding firearms owners are always complaining about the laws. It is not necessarily that semi Autos have been all but taken away. It is the fact that anytime you breathe the word firearm, someone comes out with a new useless law or someone is accused of trying to undermine John Howards gun laws.
The fact is, there are several pieces of legislation that govern what a gel blaster is according to the law. One of them is the customs prohibited import regulations and the others are each state and territories firearms act. So we are looking at 9 different pieces of legislation and 9 different definitions of firearm and 9 different interpretations of the way a product appears.
There is also 9 different ways that replicas are treated under all of these acts. I am no expert on the laws of each state or territory; however, I am fairly well versed with the Customs Import regulations and the QLD firearms Act.
The Customs import regs is clear, a fire arm is a device that discharges Shot, Bullet or other projectiles. However, the courts disagreed with this and ruled that other must mean something similar to Shot or Bullet.
You can read my previous post for more details on this. Of course gel balls are not ammunition and therefor a blaster is not a firearm.

Customs are now saying that a gel ball gun is an imitation firearm. They are not negotiable on this and they require an import permit to release the goods into the custody of any citizen of any state. This is the Law and they are correct.Gel Blasting in Aus the Donnybrook experience
QLD police is a less difficult one. A firearm must be able to cause Death or injury according to the QLD firearms act.
As a gel ball is unable to cause injury it is deemed as a toy and therefor is legal in the state of QLD. There is literally no more to it than that. I would argue that Airsoft does not meet the definition of a firearm in the state of QLD simply because it is unable to Cause injury! Before you start disagreeing with me on this point think about the precedent set in our case vs Customs.
Other cannot just mean anything, just as the word "injury" cannot mean just anything.Acli varese
It is called the ejusdem generis rule. From state to state you will find that the definitions differ. I would love to hear from anyone who has any further information regarding each states legislation and how they think Gel blasters would be categorised.
I am definitely sure that in WA, Gel blasters are definitely not classed as a firearm as their definition is almost identical to the customs definition. The replica issue I really don't have a clue about.M7 vs insead
At the end of the day, gel blasters are Legal in QLD and you need a permit to get them through at the border. If the police catch you with one in your car in QLD they may try to ping you, but you will not be charged with an offence for possession of these products.
I am going to try to get a State by state post up on this blog as I get more information on each of the definitions. For other countries, pls check our shipping policy. A hop-up is the best upgrade you can add to any gel blaster and improves accuracy and range.
This blaster is basically an updated SKD Glock G18 which was the most popular mag-fed pistol for quite a while and has been improved in all regards. The improved quality is noticeable even before shooting it. The size is of course scaled to a real Beretta. If you hold the button down it will also work as a magazine prime to preload the gel balls via the electronic magazine. The button is not ambidextrous however and will favour right handed users.
The blaster has an inbuilt 7. The flashlight easily mounts to the bottom rail. With the flashlight attached, both batteries work in a series and create This leads to superb trigger response in semi-auto and an impressive fire rate for a blowback blaster. Running full-auto on The Beretta is relatively accurate at its effective range which leads me to believe that the barrel to cylinder volume ratio has been considered in its design.
The magazine holds roughly gels and will run out quickly on This gives you easy access to the spring, barrel and plunger if you wish to do any upgrades. The inbuilt battery and flashlight battery are both charged via a cable which is the same one as the SKD Glock G Click here to purchase this blaster on eBay. The M shoots at a super-fast 15 rounds per second and can hold up to gel balls in its clear hopper.
The hopper screws into a connector piece that slides onto the top rail of the blaster.Oppo a3s update pie
There are also three additional rails on the sides and bottom which can be used to mount lasers, flashlights, grips etc. The bottom rail swings open to reveal the battery compartment. Keep in mind that it only shoots in full-auto.
My chronograph read in at 20 rounds per second which is insane. Just be sure to get the correct size mAh 62mm x 18mm so it still fits in the battery compartment. Shooting up to FPS, this is as powerful as it gets for stock pistols currently.
